February, 9 2008 Blaine Bengals vs. Roseau Rams
Hockey Day Minnesota Event

Hockey Day Minnesota debuted on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, with 11 hours of programming, including four live hockey telecasts.  On Saturday, February 9, 2008 Minnesota celebrated it's second annual Hockey Day Minnesota with over 16 hours of hockey coverage on FSN beginning with televised coverage starting at 9a.m. and concluded with a delayed broadcast of the Blaine versus Roseau game from Lake of the Woods’ Baudette Bay from 11p.m. -1:30a.m.  The Bengals vs. Roseau game ended in a 1-0 win for the undefeated Roseau Rams team.  Weather played a large factor in keeping the score close than anything else in this game.  But giving credit where credit is due, Blaine held the game scoreless until Roseau scored on a power play early in the third period for the games only goal. Gametime temperatures were at a chilly -30 degrees, with windchills in the -45+ range, making for some modern era "old-time hockey at it's finest", and some challenges while taking photos.

Thanks again Baudette for your hospitality!  The event surrounding the game and leading up to the "Hockey Classic" was great for a hockey rube like myself.  The day made me looking forward to more Hockey Day Minnesota events!  Enjoy the photos below

"The Baudette Bay Hockey Classic is more than a hockey game. It’s a special event, a festive celebration and a timeless reenactment of a game that has grown in the hearts and souls of players and fans for decades. The Classic brings the history of hockey to the present in its original form. The Baudette Bay Hockey Classic is played in commemoration of old time, “pond hockey.” Its “arena” is the Bay; and it returned to Baudette on Saturday, February 9, 2008.

The games and events of the Baudette Bay Hockey Classic were once again a major feature of “Hockey Day Minnesota”. The concept to host an outdoor hockey game on the Baudette Bay was born through visionaries simply known as modern day, high school hockey coaches. The purpose was simple in their minds...to stage a game that would illustrate the origin of hockey to a generation of young, indoor arena players. The vision grew to include the emotional impact that this event would surely have on generations of past hockey players. The mission for February 9, 2008 was this: The Baudette Bay Hockey Classic will feature four strong, high school hockey teams in a traditional, outdoor pond hockey setting, and will link generations of players, fans, coaches and hockey enthusiasts at all levels. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!"  Source: bbhcmn.com
